Whistleblower: EPA shut down research, was unprepared for a spill

The following is a statement of David Lewis, Director of the Center for Research on Public Health and the Environment, board member of the National Whistleblowers Center in Washington, DC, and a former employee of the EPA.

It is a testament to the bureaucratic control, corporate influence, and silencing of scientists at government institutions like the EPA which has grown more and more problematic over the years. By continuing to release information such as this we hope to provide the sort of public awareness that it will take to push the federal government into decisive action.
  • "From 1998-2003, industry influence on the U.S. EPA and University of Georgia Department of Marine Sciences shut down my research into the potential of a blowout from an offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Scientific research in government and academia plays an important role in protecting our shores. Research in government and academia, however, has become increasingly politicized and controlled by industry." - David Lewis

Thanks for getting this out there. I was reading something similar earlier today on Think Progress about the DOJ silencing scientists working on the spill. We can't stand for this kind of stuff any longer!

This sort of stuff really makes you wonder just who to trust (other than whistleblowers and organizations like this).
